Color Inspiration

Communication Arts, July/August 2009, Page 139 This composition was made by an illustrator, Gary Kelley, who created a series of images for a biography of Eleanor Roosevelt. It is a composition made of pastel on paper. This piece captured my attention through its old, dark, and gloomy tone. It's somewhat dull, but perhaps its meant to be taken seriously and describes how Eleanor Roosevelt viewed the place. I took a look at the rest of the series and found that they all contain this sort of color scheme. It really makes you wonder what type of life Eleanor Roosevelt lived.

Positive/Negative Space

Communication Arts, May/June 2014, Page 205 This composition was made by Victo Ngai for a horror novelette by Dale Bailey. It displays a party before the end of the world. There are two different viewpoints to this composition. For the first, the background shows how people act "carefree" before anything bad is going to happen. But then in the center, the dancer commits suicide because she already knows the apocalypse is happening. For the second, the background show how people want to live their lives before the apocalypse catches up to them. Then, they see the dancer commit suicide and sort of embrace that as the "normal thing to do" in their current situation. Very interesting composition.

Re: Unity

PRINT, December 2014, Page 16 This composition contains Unity in three different ways with its "grid of faces". I would say that it shows Unity through proximity, repetition, and color. Proximity is shown through the composition's use of the grid. Repetition is shown through the faces repeating in each box of the grid. Color is shown throughout the grid with its different shades of blue.

Re: Rhythm

PRINT, December 2014, Page 14 This composition contains Rhythm by showing movement in the ground plane from a three dimensional plane to a two dimensional plane. The composition achieves this through repeating and alternating colors. The three different tile colors can produce the shadows needed to make the illusion of a three dimensional cube. I would say that this composition contains a combination of alternating and progressive Rhythm.

Depth

Print, June 2014, Page 32 This piece shows Depth through its use of value and texture. The attached shadows and the cast shadows on the sides of the letters create the illusion that these letters are three-dimensional. The texture on the top of the letters produce a spatial effect of pulling outward. I assume the artist did this to add to the illusion that these letters are massive and three-dimensional.

Rhythm

PRINT, June 2014, Page 24 This piece contains visual rhythm by showing movement through a repetition of line, color, and shape. The line of colored paint creates a sense of movement as it travels down the page. The rectangular shape that holds these colors repeat in the same motion as the colored paint line. Both of these together complete the idea that color is being splattered across the black "canvas" for a celebration.
